Every Love Song I Ever Wrote

Over the years, the band’s big-hearted guitarist, Dee Sharpe, and I have collaborated on many songs, mostly love songs. Dee is one of the most hopelessly romantic people I know and this has led him to pen tributes to a procession of unsuitable lovers over the years, notably buxom barmaid Moira from the Ship Inn in Broughty Ferry and the beautiful Margaret, who, rather disappointingly for Dee and to the consternation of those close to him, turned out to be a serial killer.

Small wonder, then, that Dee looks back on his catalogue of love songs and wonders what on earth possessed him to write them. The images he has painted of his plentiful love interests bear no resemblance to reality.

We were pondering this question over a few beers in the Ship Inn the other day, when all of a sudden, Dee went quiet. For a good ten seconds, he sat with his glass half raised to his mouth, which was open in a manner that called to mind a codfish, staring over my shoulder. I turned in my chair and caught sight of a small, dark-haired woman in the doorway. She had a pleasant smile, that turned to a look of open-mouthed astonishment not unlike Dee’s but prettier, less reminiscent of a cod, more like an angel fish or a neon tetra. She recovered the power of speech before Dee did.

“Dee?” she said, and Dee dropped his beer.

A chance meeting after many years with his first love. Suddenly, so many things made sense.
