After an outdoor concert on the banks of the Zambezi during our recent tour of southern Africa, the boys and I were sitting around snacking on the best bits of the crocodile that had inadvisedly wandered into our alto saxophone ace, Aldo Sachs’s tent and choked to death on the smoke of his unfiltered Gauloise cigarettes, when a young lady from the nearby village stopped by our campfire and asked what we were eating. She was surprised to learn that the crocodile had been smoked while still alive, but agreed that it tasted great. Our guitarist, Dee Sharpe, was soon deep in conversation with this Botswanan beauty, and I realized that he was about to fall in love again, something he hadn’t done for over two weeks. I was right, and this provided the inspiration for this song. It owes its African rhythm to the fact that we recorded it with some lovely blokes we met in a bar in Swakopmund, Namibia.
Hi there, what a trip. I can just imagine sitting around the campfire listening to Africa music and the sound of the night. Eating crocodile – I think i may have skipped. I love your song- I can hear the Africa rhythms. It had a uplifting and joyful tone. You should listen to Johnny Clegg’s music- he embraced the African music sound.. My favourite song is “Scatterlings of Africa”, because I live in another country. It brings a tear to my eye.
Hey, Anne-Marie. Glad you enjoyed it. I’ve known and enjoyed Johnny Clegg’s music for a long time. I did hear some of his songs among those our guide played on the bus, as well as a new fave, Mango Groove. It seemed that everywhere we stopped we were greeted with music and dance.
